Choosing Generic Vs Branded Sertraline

X

Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient and are equally effective and medically equivalent as the branded products but are available at a lower price. Generic manufacturers have to demonstrate that they are medically identical to the branded product - i.e. they offer the same quality, strength, stability and effectiveness.

What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a distressing male sexual dysfunction that can be present from the first sexual encounter or can develop later in life. It is extremely common with up to 1 in 3 men affected at some point in their lives. Men with premature ejaculation go through the same process of ejaculation, but it happens more quickly and with a reduced feeling of control. A combination of physiological and psychological factors are believed to impact ejaculatory latency ( the time it takes to ejaculate after penetration), and research suggests that serotonin plays a central role in this. The negative consequences of premature ejaculation include sexual dissatisfaction, personal distress, interpersonal difficulty, low self-esteem, and they may affect partner satisfaction as well.

What is Sertraline?

Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), predominantly used for anxiety and depression. However, there is good research showing SSRIs are an effective treatment for premature ejaculation as well, with ejaculatory latency increasing more than three fold for many men. These medications are known to be safe and well tolerated.

Sertraline dosage

We recommend a starting dose for premature ejaculation treatment of 25 mg.

How to take?

Tablets should be swallowed whole to avoid the bitter taste. It is recommended that tablets be taken with at least one full glass of water. Sertraline may be taken with or without food.

Take one tablet at least 1-2 hours prior to sexual intercourse on days you are planning to be sexually active. Do not take more than one tablet a day.

Sertraline used for premature ejaculation is not intended for continuous daily use and should be taken only when sexual activity is anticipated. Sertraline must not be taken more frequently than once every 24 hours.

Side effects

The most common side effects are nausea, dizziness, headache and diarrhoea.

Less commonly they can affect sleep and cause restlessness and anxiety. If the tablets are causing these symptoms, they should be stopped.

Rarely, they can cause or increase suicidal thoughts. Where  this is an issue, they should be stopped and the help of a doctor immediately sought.

Sertraline should never be taken with other antidepressant medication as dangerous side effects can occur.
