A UTI (urinary tract infection) is a form of bacterial infection that affects the bladder. This is also known as cystitis, and is more common in women.
Symptoms of UTIs include: a burning or itching sensation when you pee, dark cloudy urine or needing to use the toilet more than normal. Some people will experience some nausea or a high fever.
Although we don’t know what fully causes UTIs, it is often due to bacteria that is typically found in the bowel traveling to the urinary tract. Some factors that can aggravate this can be sexual intercourse, wiping back to front when using the toilet and not drinking enough fluids.
No, UTIs aren't a sexually transmitted infection. However, for some women, having sex can irritate the urinary tract and trigger an infection. If you have a UTI, it’s recommended to avoid having sex until symptoms have disappeared with treatment. Peeing immediately after sex can also help to reduce the chances of this occurring in the future.
Some over the counter treatments can help to neutralize the urine, which makes it difficult for the bacteria to grow in the bladder. However, a short course of antibiotics are the best treatment for UTIs.
In the case of antibiotics being prescribed, the typical course is one capsule that's taken twice a day for five days.
